A unique, almost musical knock on the door. The same one Theun has used with Thesa since they were children. He had absurdly insisted that their knocks should sound nothing like those of their parents. It’s taken a decade or so for it to become even moderately useful.

He holds the heavy bag of food as he waits. The scent of beef and fried potatoes radiates out of it. Resting on the floor is a drink holder with soda, lemonade, and two shakes.

The door opens unceremoniously to a rare sight of Tess in sweats. The usually well-put together woman isn't quite 'slumming' it, even in her nice valour sweats but she is very visibly unlike herself. The sight of her brother at the door with the tell tale smell of cheeseburgers makes her lip wobble just a little before she hides her face in his shoulder as she hugs him tight wordlessly.

Theun drops the bag of food and pulls Tess in close, letting her hide in the crook of his shoulder. His arms are strong now, and he wraps them around her like he could protect his big sister from something, anything, everything.

“Here I am, here you are,” he murmurs in Dutch. “Are you hungry?”

"No, but I am now." she replies back in Dutch, as the smell of good burgers makes her stomach rumble. She's had far too much wine already, wallowing in self-pity. Neither of them has said the words and it was unclear who had broken up with whom but she knew that in her gut, it was over.

He leans down to grab the bag again, and with his other arm urges her to go inside. “Let’s go then, I don’t want to interrogate you on an empty stomach.”

In truth there is nothing to tell Theun, as Tessa's and Toni's whole relationship was that there wasn't any commitment or strings, and was always meant to last as long as it lasts.

And now in its inevitable end, all Tess can say is that Toni wasn't interested anymore.

"Thank you for dinner." Tess smiles, ending the short exposition like she's delivering a lecture.

“You earned it.” Theun’s chin is propped up on his hand, having listened attentively to the whole miserable story. What Thee does with Toni and Gus isn’t his business, but sometimes he daydreams about them both spontaneously quitting and going no-contact.

“I’m sorry, Thee.” He smiles back, a little sadder. “It still sucks.”

"I don't. I did a bad thing."

She makes a face and starts tearing a poor French Fry into small pieces, "I slapped Nate."

Theun can’t help it, he laughs. There’s not a single sliver of disapproval, just pure curiosity when he asks: “Why?

"I don't know how or why, but I think he caused this." She picks a new victim from her plate. "I'm sure he said something to Toni."

“Why is she listening to him?” Theun’s voice drips with judgement, not towards Tess, but towards Toni and Nate.

Despite the "break-up", Tess still sticks up for her ex-wife, "They're best friends. Of course she listens to him." She narrows her eyes still and continues to tear the new fry into pieces, "Whatever he said."

Theun sighs, watching the potato graveyard Tess is creating grow bit by bit. “She was never good enough for you anyway,” he says sullenly. “If she leaves you again because of that half-wit… it just proves my point.”

"To be fair, I left her." Tess pouts, not quite agreeing but also still too raw to fully defend her ex-wife under the circumstance. She decided to change the subject instead, "Gus is letting me have Higgs for a few days."

Gus. That name immediately makes Theun bitterly suspicious. He knows his sister’s patterns and Gus slots into them like a perfect cursed puzzle piece. But he looks at Tess’ face, and sees her eyes red from crying and too much wine. It’s not the right time to start a fight.

“Let’s spoil him so he knows what he’s missing when Gus takes him back,” he suggests, a little more playful. “And maybe some treats that assure terrible gas when he goes home.”

Tess laughs, because spoiling their dog and playing harmless little pranks like that are exactly what she needs.
