If there was one thing one could do to get Tess hot and bothered, it was to ignore her when she wanted attention.

In a way, it was why hooking up with her ex-wife somehow still worked. There was no commitment beyond having a good time and that was just the way she liked it; but the past few days felt different and there was only so much a woman could take before she hit the point of no return (an exaggeration, but Tess was feeling dramatic).

Tess flitted around the archives, ignoring the books and records, until she finally found the familiar crop of deliciously red hair. Very shamelessly, Tess floated towards Toni and wedged herself between the other woman and the shelf in front of her, pouting slightly.

And Toni, with no hesitation, simply reached around her for the book on the shelf, not even looking. “Oh hey, Tess.”

The lore of the legendary on-base divorce of Toni Fausti and Tess Larsen was spoken largely of in hushed tones, but it roughly started a little something like this. A visibly distant redhead, pursued by a blonde in heels and a scowl, until one day she wasn’t pursuing her anymore.

“You need something?” Toni asked, looking down at the title of the book she had found, very much aware of this fact.

Tess felt her jaw drop just a little at the impartial reply, before she managed to snap it shut. A wary sense of deja vu hit her like a truck and she stood in place, unsure of herself.

"Maybe." she tried to sound unaffected, ignoring the tightening in her throat as memories of the weeks before their divorce resurfaced.

Toni heard it all the same and swallowed, hard, opening the book. “Go ahead. What’s up?” She continued, carefully, conscious of never, ever making eye contact. Eye contact was when Tess won, and Toni didn’t want to talk about her feelings today. She’d said too much to Gus, of all people.

"I thought…you might not have seen my message." Tess said, extending an olive branch and stared fixedly at Toni's face for a crumb of…well, anything.

“I don’t think I did.” Toni shrugged, lying, flicking through the pages. “Was it important? Sorry, had-“ She paused. “A lot on my mind this week.”

"I see." Tess replied with a measured neutrality, and licked her lips. "No, it was nothing. You're- Clearly busy." There was a pause as she tried to think of something else to say, "I'll…leave you to your work then."

It was at that point that Toni finally, predictably, blundered. That was the point she looked up, and met Tess’ eyes with a frown at the carefulness in her tone, all too familiar with this particular conversation and now only thinking ‘well that was quicker than last time’.

“Yeah.” Toni said, licking her own lips now, a mix of emotions filling her chest. “I’ll call you. When I’m less… busy.”

"Yeah." Tess repeated, matching Toni's tone. She blinked and mustered a smile, "Well. I'll see you around then."
