LOG.

WHO: Jack Callahan & Benny Baer.
WHERE: Their apartments.
WHEN: 2024.
WHAT: The beginning of a beautiful partnership, part 2.
WARNINGS: N/A.

Well, it was official. HQ had reassigned him to partner with Jack Callahan.

Twenty minutes after the notification landed, Benny was still processing the news at his kitchen table. Jack was a close friend, his neighbor, and a seasoned Wrangler — all positives. But the thought of Emmett transitioning out of the department and breaking off their long-standing partnership felt like losing a limb. For so long, he’d been one half of Emmett and Benny, a pairing that felt just as ingrained in the department as Jack and Nate.

Twenty minutes. That was his limit for wallowing. Once it was up, he pulled a six pack of Guinness from the fridge and made the short trek to Jack’s. He held up the offering as soon as the door swung open, one shoulder rising and falling in a half-shrug.

“Looks like we’re going to be seeing a lot more of each other.”

"What a tragedy." Jack replied dryly, frowning for good measure.

But they both knew that of all the active wranglers on base, Benny was at the top of Jack's list if he had any say in it. It was the second time now that he was changing partners but while he hated big changes like this, he had to admit that it did feel easier to stomach the second time around and it definitely helped that it was Benny.

"I guess I'll accept this since you brought Guinness." he added as he shut the door behind his new partner. The sounds of cheering from the telly echoed through the hallway from the direction of the living room. "I got the game on, but it's a replay from last night."

He hadn't really been watching. It was just nice to have something in the background while he contemplated the new partnership.

Benny made a beeline to the kitchen first, beer in hand. Grabbing a couple bottles, he quickly popped each cap off by bracing them against the countertop’s edge. Only then did he move to the living room, handing Jack a Guinness before sinking into an armchair. He gave the game a cursory glance — English football was no baseball — before sighing and shooting Jack a sidelong look. No point in beating around the bush.

“I know why I’ve been assigned, but why you? You and Nate have always been like this,” he said, matter-of-factly, holding up two crossed fingers for emphasis.

"Hell if I know," was the honest answer, further emphasized with a quick rise of Jack's shoulders before he took a swig of his stout. He gave his new partner a conspiratorial look, before voicing the guess he'd been workshopping since the notification hit.

"Sure look, I figure maybe they want us to partner with some of the newer wranglers." he began, the perpetual wrinkle between his brows deepening in thought, "-but then they gave me your ugly mug and it just goes to show what I know."

A quick flash of a grin lit up his face for a second at the jab.

“You’re one to talk,” Benny shot back, a flicker of his own smile mirroring Jack’s. He took a long pull from his Guinness, welcoming the distraction of its dark, rich flavor. This was good. Working with Jack would be good. No sense in moping just because Em traded him in for a stack of dry history books.

“Maybe,” he mused, leaning forward slightly in his chair, “they just figured we were the only two idiots who could tolerate each other. It’d be cruel to force some bright young Wrangler to put up with your stubborn ass.”

"That's gas. Must be it then. Can't think of any other reason why." Jack tipped his beer at Benny. Yeah this wasn't going to be too bad, he thought. He'd much rather be paired up with his fellow man from the past than a random new grad that he'd have to befriend and get to know.

An inquiring mind might wonder why he didn't get his intern mentee who was graduating too, but TEA HR was unpredictable like that. Jack wasn't going to question it anymore than he was going to question the partner swapping.
